The Mathematical Institute of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (MISANU), in collaboration with the Center for the Promotion of Science organizes every year, a traditional national science engagement event: May Month of Mathematics, a mathematical festival.

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, this year it was held as a virtual event in September and October 2020 besides to some public events in Belgrade and Novi Sad.

One of the major events was dedicated to Women in Mathematics. Thanks to the courtesy and generous help of Noel Tovia Mattoff, a famous photographer, and the support of Prof. Sylvie Paycha from the University of Potsdam, the exhibition Women of Mathematics throughout Europe – A gallery of portraits was organized in the beautiful ambient of the Belgrade Fortress. The exhibition offered a glimpse into the world of thirteen women mathematicians in Europe through photographs by Noel Tovia Matoff and excerpts of interviews by Sylvie Paycha and Sara Azzali. The exhibition has been already presented in more than 40 countries around the globe, and translated into several languages, among others, in Serbian. Thanks to Prof. Dušanka Perišić, from the University of Novi Sad, and Biljana Nedeljkov, a member of MISANU GEP working group, the exhibition was also organized in the Cultural Center in Novi Sad, a city that is the European Cultural Capital for 2021.


The Exhibition was followed by an appropriate Catalogue that includes the interviews of 13 female researchers from different countries. It was also presented to the public in the Mathematical Grammar School of Belgrade by moderator Dobrivoje Lale Erić, and three panelists, Prof. Vesna Todorčević, Prof. Dušanka Perišić, and Prof. Đorđe Baralić. The activities of MISANU in the area of science promotion and gender equality in RPOs were also presented and discussed; among which especially the LeTSGEPs project and establishment of the MISANU GEP working group.
